  1. Max Weber. Collected methodological writings was launched last last week (3 May) at Jesus College, Cambridge. This is a new translation of all of Weber’s methodological writings. It has a glossary and a discussion of translation terms. This has already attracted comment.

W.G. Runciman favoured keeping ‘Wissenschaft’ the same rather than translating it as ‘science’, which in English points to natural science alone. Ditto for “Kultur”, for which the English ‘culture’ or ‘civilization’ are insufficient. ‘Geist’ also poses a challenge – in the volume it is translated as ‘spirit’.
